The effects of COVID-19 Pandemic are still visible in most communities with adolescent girls and young women 15 to 24 years being the most affected.

If there were conditions provided for the girl-child and women which reduced exposure to unwanted advances, economic pressures, forced marriage, low skills, child labour and Gender based violence we would not have the high pregnancies in many child mothers in Nnyendo Ssenyange Sub-county.

This is a story of a child mother whose baby is one and she is currently pregnant. I found them in Kitovu-Nnume and they were desperate. This is a short interview about our meeting.

Interviewer:

Hello, tell me your names. I see you have a young baby and you are pregnant. Where do you get support?

Interviewee:

I am called Nagyinda Joyce. I am 20 years old. I was born on the 11th September 2003 in Kyazanga, Lwengo District. I stay in Nnyendo- Kitovu Nnume zone, Masaka City.

Interviewer:

I am so happy to be talking to you. Tell me more please.

Interviewee:

I got pregnant when I was in Senior Three (3) in 2021 during the COVID-19 lockdown. I had to leave home and come to live with my brother who is a repair mechanic in Nnyendo.

Interviewer:

I am sure you had to leave your parents’ home to come and stay with your brother. I am so glad you have a roof over your head. I notice you are pregnant. How do you manage?

Interviewee:

I gave birth to a baby girl who is one year old now. The father of my child did not give me support but abandoned me instead. I got into another relationship where I expected the man to support me and my child because I didn’t have any help. I got pregnant again and this man also left me. I am now staying with my brother who loves me unconditionally even if he is not doing well financially.

Interviewer:

What are some of the challenges you face?

Interviewee:

We have food challenges, clothing and medical care needs. I find a challenge in accessing these essential needs because I am currently not working and I don’t have any skill. If I had a skill I would not hesitate to engage in an income generating activity to sustain myself. I request you to support me with food, clothing, medication and a life skill, so that I can take care of my children.

Interviewer:

I do not have much to give you but, I shall keep checking on you to share with you the little I have.

Interviewee:

Thanks and may God bless you abundantly.
